What is a Pell Grant? Who does it apply to?

Body

A Federal Pell Grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid, except under certain circumstances.

Who Does It Apply To?

The Pell Grant is generally for:

✅ Undergraduate Students

  • Students working toward their first bachelor’s degree

  • Students in associate degree or eligible certificate programs

✅ Students With Financial Need

  • Determined through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

  • Based largely on family income and financial circumstances

❌ Usually Not For:

  • Graduate students (with rare exceptions for certain teaching programs)

  • Students who already have a bachelor’s degree

  • Students without demonstrated financial need

Here are some reasons you might have to repay all or part of a federal grant:

  • You withdrew early from the program for which the grant was given to you.
  • Your enrollment status changed in a way that reduced your eligibility for your grant. For example, if you switch from full-time enrollment to part-time, your grant amount will be reduced.
  • You received outside scholarships or grants that reduced your need for federal student aid.

Federal Pell Grants usually are awarded only to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's or a professional degree. In some cases. however, a student enrolled in a post-baccalaureate teacher certification program might receive a Federal Pell GrantStudents with criminal convictions have limited eligibility for Federal student aid.
